Henning Höne, the chairman of the FDP in North Rhine-Westphalia, is attempting to shift the party leadership battle towards a broader, substantive platform for the Liberals and a new approach to leadership. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” (Wednesday edition), Höne stated his goal is to build a party encompassing all interpretations of liberalism. He added, “This party must provide room for people deeply committed to economic issues just as much as it does for those who advocate for more civil rights. My offer is a smart political and leadership style. I aim to make the narrative of liberalism relatable in everyday life, perhaps by highlighting our political ideas through a renewal of the promise of advancement”. He expressed his hope for a path that unites rather than divides.
Regarding the current debate over high fuel prices, Höne called for the immediate repeal of the recently implemented, day-by-day rule within antitrust law. He argued that the “daily, heavy price increase at noon is obviously the wrong approach because prices are first raised sharply”. Höne contended that figures such as Federal Minister Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), Deputy Chancellor and SPD leader Lars Klingbeil, and Bavarian Minister President and CSU leader Markus Söder “create a state-mandated price hike every noon”. According to Höne, this measure “must disappear immediately”.
