Expert Slams Coalition's Energy Tax Cut as Worst Option

Monika Schnitzer sharply criticized the ruling coalition’s plans aimed at easing the burden on citizens. Speaking to the Funke media group, the chairperson of the expert advisory board on the economy stated, “A price reduction for everyone through a time-limited suspension of the energy tax is the worst of all the options discussed so far”. She added that this measure distributed help unfairly, even to people who could manage the higher cost. According to Schnitzer, such an action diminishes the incentive to lower fuel consumption and gives people the false impression that the state protects them from all external crises, including the wealthy. Alternatively, Schnitzer suggested that providing targeted support only to those with genuine need would have been the better decision.
