EU Unveils Age Verification App to Boost Online Child Safety

The European Commission has introduced a new age verification application designed to enhance the protection of children online. On Wednesday, Commission President von der Leyen stated that the app will allow users to prove their age when accessing online platforms, similar to how age restrictions are enforced when purchasing alcoholic beverages in physical stores. She emphasized that the application will be user-friendly, adhere to the highest data protection standards, and be completely open source.

While the timeline and location of the app’s potential mandatory use remain undetermined, von der Leyen made it clear that the goal is to hold online platforms accountable for failing to adequately protect children. The Commission President underscored that child safety in the digital sphere is as vital as it is in real life. This application represents a direct response to growing concerns from parents and Member States regarding the online safety of minors.

According to von der Leyen, the app marks another effort by the EU to devise innovative solutions for emerging problems. She drew a parallel to the COVID-19 app, which was developed rapidly and utilized globally. Following similar principles, the age verification app is intended to be integrated by Member States and global partners to safeguard children from harmful and illegal content.

Separately, a committee convened last month to address child safety online is expected to submit its recommendations by the summer.
