European Parliament vice‑president Katarina Barley, a member of Germany’s SPD, told Handelsblatt that relying solely on the U.S. investigation into Jeffrey Epstein is not sufficient. She stressed that while member states retain the authority to conduct investigations, a coordinated and cooperative approach at the EU level is “incredibly important” for cross‑border cases. In that regard, Europol could play a supportive role in national probes.
Barley also highlighted the pronounced international dimension of the scandal. She urged that any indications of links between Epstein’s network and Europe be thoroughly pursued, especially given the lingering suspicion of foreign influence. By undertaking a unified European effort, she said, the EU would send an unmistakable signal that abuse of power will be confronted decisively.
