Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, reaffirmed the European Union’s close ties to the United States, even acknowledging that relations had been challenging during former President Donald Trump’s administration.
In an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”, Metsola said: “When we look at the world as a whole, Europe does not have many friends. There are few democracies that can unite against autocrats”. She contrasted this with the long‑standing partnership with the United States, noting that “the EU and the US have built a common foundation over decades”.
Metsola admitted that the relationship is not always simple. “Is it always easy?” she asked. “No, it is always a challenge”. Yet she insisted that “the relationship is not broken”. She expressed a desire for continued dialogue: “I would like for us to sit at a table and discuss how we can move forward, never with the idea of shutting the door”.
At the same time, Metsola urged Europeans to speak confidently when they disagree. “I want us to be more united and self‑confident” she said. She believes that this sense of confidence has been lost in recent years and that it must be regained. Metsola warned that Europe faces “war on our own continent, unreliable neighbors” and that it is essential to know who our friends are. Equally, those friends must know that they can count on us.
