European Parliament members representing the Greens, Social Democrats, Liberals and the Left have urged UEFA to take a clearer stance on the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States and to examine potential consequences, including boycotts. Their request follows the awarding of a so‑called “FIFA Peace Prize” to former U.S. President Donald Trump by FIFA, a development that the German magazine “Spiegel” reported based on a letter from the MPs.
Signatories of the letter include, for example, Green MEP Rasmus Andresen and Social Democratic MEP Matthias Ecke. In their message to UEFA’s leadership, the politicians warn that the “deterioration of core values in football” could result if the competition is held in a country whose recent political actions raise doubts about respect for international law, democratic standards and the principle of self‑determination.
The authors cite repeated statements about Greenland, in which the U.S. has at times described its inhabitants as a “strategic or economic asset” rather than a community entitled to decide its own future. They argue that the 2026 World Cup must not serve to normalise or legitimise such views.
