After the customs ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court, the EU Commission demanded clarification from the U.S. government regarding its future tariff policies. Brussels stated that the current situation is not conducive to a “fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial” trans‑Atlantic trade and investment environment, as agreed in the joint EU‑U.S. declaration of August 2025. The commission emphasized that it will always safeguard the interests of the EU without compromise. EU companies and exporters must be treated fairly and rely on predictability and legal certainty.
The EU expects the United States to honor its commitments under the joint declaration, just as the EU holds itself to its own obligations. Of particular importance is that EU products continue to enjoy the most competitive treatment without tariffs rising above the previously agreed ceiling. Studies confirm that tariffs function as taxes that drive up costs for both consumers and businesses.
The commission remains in close and continuous contact with the U.S. government and will keep working to lower tariffs in order to preserve a stable and predictable trans‑Atlantic trade environment.
