The EU Commission has rejected worries that a flare‑up in the Iran conflict could soon spark a fresh wave of refugees heading towards Europe.
In a recent briefing to the German daily “Bild”, the EU Commissioner responsible for migration, Magnus Brunner, explained that after talking with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Monday, he learned the Turkish government has shut its borders toward Iran. Brunner said the two sides are keen to keep, and even strengthen, their cooperation.
During his visit to Senegal, Brunner signed a new asylum agreement on Tuesday and handed over EU‑financed patrol boats and ships to the Senegalese coast guard in Dakar. He praised the partnership, noting that illegal migration-people smuggled from Senegal to Europe-has fallen by more than 60 percent, a sign of the cooperation’s success. Brunner also met with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to discuss further joint actions against international drug trafficking.
