Women will receive support from the EU in efforts to close the so-called gender pay gap. According to labor law expert Adam Sagan, speaking to “Die Zeit”, salary negotiations are set to change significantly in the coming years. This change is due to the EU’s Pay Transparency Directive, which must be incorporated into national law by June 7th of this year. The directive mandates that “employers must disclose and justify pay differences between men and women”.
It is commonly known that a discrepancy often exists in the pay received by women compared to men for the same work. Sagan, a civil law professor at the University of Bayreuth, noted that if this situation persists, initial lawsuits filed in labor courts are likely to succeed, stating, “The condemnations will come”.
Sagan further commented that many companies will struggle to sufficiently explain all pay differentials. He anticipates that in the future, men’s compensation will increase at a slower rate, while women will benefit disproportionately more during salary increases for the foreseeable future. Consequently, this trend is expected to gradually reduce gender-based discrepancies in salaries.
