Estonia’s Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, commended Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) after the German government marks its first year in office. Speaking to “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” Tsahkna stated that the government has demonstrated a clear willingness to assume responsibility.
He noted that in a context of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, Germany has shown decisive leadership. This leadership is based on its support for Ukraine, increased pressure on Russia, strengthening European security, and maintaining the cohesion of both the EU and NATO-factors he deems essential for restoring Europe’s credibility and securing a lasting peace.
Tsahkna specifically highlighted the Merz administration’s ongoing efforts to bolster European security. A critical decision noted was Germany’s commitment to increasing defense expenditures. Such a move is seen as vital for strengthening deterrence, stabilizing NATO, and allowing Europe as a whole to take on greater responsibility within the alliance.
Additionally, Estonia appreciates Germany’s tangible contributions to regional security. These contributions include participation in the air monitoring mission in Ämari and the upkeep of troops stationed in Lithuania, both of which directly contribute to peace and stability in the region.
