Employers Demand More Drive From Employees And Better Policy Climate

Steffen Kampeter, CEO of the Federation of German Employers’ Associations (BDA), called for a stronger work ethic among the labor force and significant improvements in the political and economic framework, citing the current economic climate in Germany. Speaking on the radio program “Blome und Pfeffer” on Monday, Kampeter stated that employees need to apply themselves more, advocating for a renewed enthusiasm for work. He cautioned that this perceived need for effort was not related to laziness, adding that Germany has become overly reliant on the reforms introduced under Hartz IV and continues to harbor the outdated belief that it is still the most competitive business location in Europe-a claim he strongly refuted as false.

Furthermore, Kampeter voiced serious concerns regarding the heavy burdens facing companies. He highlighted high energy costs, excessive bureaucratic requirements, and elevated labor expenses, emphasizing that these issues can only be sustained as long as Germany remains capable of producing high-quality goods. However, he noted that even in the automotive sector, alternative nations are successfully producing reliable vehicles.

The BDA chief directed sharp criticism toward the federal government. While many continuous reforms are discussed, Kampeter argued that the clearest failing is the government’s perceived inaction. He stressed that political action is essential to create better conditions for industry. He concluded by stating that businesses focus solely on producing quality goods and services, placing the responsibility for improving the overall environment squarely upon the federal government.
