Economist Ulrike Malmendier has called for a discussion between Federal Minister of Economic Affairs Katharina Reiche (CDU) and her former predecessor, Robert Habeck (Greens). “I would like Ms Reiche and Mr Habeck to sit down and talk” the former economic minister told ”Stern” and ntv.
Both officials have faced almost identical difficulties. Malmendier noted, “The crises confronting each of them share striking similarities”. The focus has been on rising energy prices, growing uncertainty, and necessary adjustments in the economy.
From Malmendier’s perspective, there is little learning occurring from each other’s experiences. She asked, “Why isn’t there a deeper exchange?” She emphasized that in situations like this, it would be wise to share lessons across party lines, noting that Germany cannot afford to do without that collective knowledge.
Malmendier’s tenure on the Expert Council for Economic Assessment of Germany’s overall economic development has recently ended. The council has named Austrian economist Gabriel Felbermayr to replace her. The decision not to extend her mandate sparked criticism, with even members of the council expressing surprise at the outcome.
