Easter Egg Shortage Looms as Germany Faces Empty Shelves Ahead of Spring

Germany is facing empty egg shelves in supermarkets right before Easter. Analyst Margit Beck of Marktinfo Eier & Geflügel (MEG) told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland that shortages have already been occurring for some time. She warned that by the afternoon of Good Friday there could be no eggs left at all.

The good news is that prices remain steady despite the tight situation. “Retail grocery stores operate on fixed yearly contract prices for goods, so they have no reason to raise prices just before Easter” Beck explained to RND.

The egg market has been under pressure for a while. The current low production is mainly caused by disease outbreaks such as avian flu and the first re‑emergence of Newcastle disease in 30 years. Meanwhile, demand for eggs in Germany is rising, with last year’s consumption hitting a new record of 252 eggs per capita.
