After the death of cartel boss Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho” dozens of people were killed amid severe unrest in Mexico.
Mexican Interior Minister Omar García Harfuch said Monday that at least 25 National Guard members, 30 cartel members, and additional justice officials and civilians lost their lives in the fighting.
Most of the roadblocks have now been removed and there are no new reports of additional blockades. Main thoroughfares have been cleared, and the affected areas are reportedly under control. Harfuch noted that 85 roadblocks were recorded across various states.
Mexican security forces killed the CJNG leader on Sunday during an attempted arrest in the western state of Jalisco. The cartel responded with massive roadblocks. In almost a dozen Mexican states, vehicles were set on fire.
The cartel boss was wounded during a raid in the town of Tapalpa and later died while being transported to Mexico City. Jalisco serves as the cartel’s base of operations and is known for trafficking large quantities of fentanyl and other drugs into the United States. According to officials, the U.S. government supplied the operation with intelligence support.
