Dobrindt Urges Coalition to Set Aside Differences for Key Reforms

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has urged the coalition partners to be willing to compromise when implementing pending reforms. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition), Dobrindt stated, “This isn’t about ideologies; parties naturally have different views on economic policy. However, reforms can only succeed if every side is prepared to step beyond their ingrained ways of doing things. I expect this willingness from all three parties forming the coalition”.

He noted that the key takeaway from the recent meeting at the Villa Borsig was the demonstration of the coalition’s functionality. The CSU politician added, “We are firmly in a decision-making phase, and this is urgently necessary. There can be no more excuses. Our country requires reforms, and the coalition achieved a significant milestone toward this over the past weekend”.

Addressing the political disagreements between Deputy Chancellor and Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche (CDU), Dobrindt emphasized the responsibility of all cabinet members. He warned that “the extreme sides, both left and right, are waiting for a government of the center to prove incapable of addressing contemporary challenges. Every single member of this federal government is fully aware that they bear shared responsibility if the project of a stable political center in Germany were to fail”.

Regarding Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s (CDU) perceived loss of leadership, the CSU politician disagreed, instead advising urgency concerning the impending health reform. He asserted, “I advise high speed. Health reforms of the past have taken far too long and were often watered down. The opportunity is now to gain consensus through structured and rapid decision-making”.
