Federal Ministry of the Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) expressed his support for the idea of electing CSU politician Ilse Aigner as the next Federal President. Speaking to “Der Spiegel” Dobrindt stated that this is “a consideration that can be continued”. He added that the proposal represents “a model and a variation” and that he can envision it. Earlier, CSU leader Markus Söder had first suggested Aigner as a candidate for the presidency. The election of the successor to Frank-Walter Steinmeier is scheduled to take place next spring by the Federal Convention.
