Deutsche Bahn to Supply Body‑Cams to All Customer‑Contact Staff by 2026 after Fatal Attacks

After the fatal attack on a train attendant in early February, Deutsche Bahn announced plans to strengthen the safety of its staff.

Deutsche Bahn’s chief, Evelyn Palla, said on Friday that by 2026 every employee who interacts with customers – not only those working on regional services but also on long‑distance trains and at stations – will be equipped with a body‑camera. Palla added that the cameras should also be able to record audio, a capability she described as essential for both investigating incidents and preventing future attacks.

To bolster onsite security, Palla plans to hire 200 additional security officers and will review whether their protective gear can be improved. For frontline employees, an emergency button will be introduced to allow rapid alerts in critical situations.

In another initiative, Palla announced that starting 1 March, DB Regio will lift the mandatory ID‑verification that currently accompanies ticket checks. “We know that this kind of ID check carries a high potential for escalation” she explained. “In the future, the decision to perform an ID check will rest with the staff member’s discretion”.
