Deutsche Bahn Reports Clean Sweep Positive Results After New Cleaning Program

Deutsche Bahn is reporting positive results three months after implementing a specialized program aimed at improving cleanliness across its trains. According to Michael Peterson, the Executive Director of Long-Distance Transport, the “quick program” is proving successful, giving passengers a noticeable improvement in both the cleanliness and service experience while traveling aboard.

For 2026 alone, the company plans to invest an additional 20 million euros in these improvements. Since January, the cleaning staff has seen a significant boost. Peterson revealed that 220 employees are now assigned to cleaning trains during service on high-traffic routes-a doubled workforce compared to before. The concrete results of the first three months include the cleaning of 680,000 toilets and the filling of approximately 170,000 waste bags. Furthermore, specialized cleaning teams are stationed at major hubs, such as Munich, ready to be deployed as needed.

The initiative has also led to improvements in specific areas. For example, the cleaning protocols for ICE train carpets have been increased in frequency. Where cleaners previously focused on intensive weekly cleaning equivalent to four football pitches, they now manage six such areas. Another part of the rapid program involves deploying mobile technicians to ensure dependable operation of the coffee machines in the onboard bistros. In the initial three months, these technicians had to replace 100 units, addressing the frequent complaint regarding the lack of a stable coffee supply.
