Werder Bremen has appointed Daniel Thioune as its new head coach, announced team manager Clemens Fritz on Wednesday. “We had very productive discussions with Daniel” Fritz said. His philosophy of football, his style, and his approach to the club’s current situation were the key factors in the decision. “We are confident that he will help us turn things around” he added.
Thioune comes from his most recent post at Fortuna Düsseldorf, where he was the head coach. He has also had coaching roles with Hamburger SV and VfL Osnabrück. The 51‑year‑old will lead his first training session with the new squad on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
Assistant coach Jan Hoepner, 44, who previously worked with Thioune at Fortuna Düsseldorf, will complete the coaching team. Thioune replaces Horst Steffen, who was dismissed over the weekend. Werder Bremen currently sit in 15th place in the league standings.
