Members of the CDU parliamentary group in the Bundestag have voiced strong criticism regarding the SPD’s demands for swift and comprehensive relief for citizens due to high energy costs. Tilman Kuban, a CDU Member of Parliament and expert on economic policy, told the “Tagesspiegel” (Saturday edition) that “the full coverage mentality must end”. Kuban further stated that the state is unable to absorb all geopolitical and global economic risks, especially given the seriousness of the budget situation and the already high level of debt. He argued that personal responsibility first requires individuals to care for themselves and their families, rather than immediately appealing to the state in every crisis, adding that “Germany must relearn this”. CDU Member of Parliament Inge Gräßle, a member of the Budget Committee, also rejected comprehensive relief measures. According to the “Tagesspiegel” she noted, “We no longer have the financial power; the debts are already too high”. She stressed that the government must first review and reprogram the current budget to gain financial leeway before discussing relief packages, warning that otherwise, they risk repeating the mistake made by the ‘traffic light’ coalition (SPD, Greens, FDP).
