CSU Chief Suggests Fuel Discount Extension If Geopolitics Demands It

Alexander Hoffmann, the CSU group leader, has stated that extending the fuel discount is not ruled out. Speaking to “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” he suggested that implementing a financial impulse, such as another reduction in energy taxes, might be necessary in July if the geopolitical situation demands it. While he acknowledged that the current discount has provided some breathing room at gas stations, Hoffmann cautioned that the state cannot fully mitigate costs if the tense situation in the Middle East or the Strait of Hormuz persists. Nevertheless, he signaled that “we do not rule out using further relief instruments” adding that the government will avoid setting any limits on its actions.

Regarding the previously mentioned “relief premium” Hoffmann emphasized that it was never a fundamental part of the coalition’s considerations, but merely a supplemental and voluntary offer. He argued that it should never be viewed as a substitute for state-led assistance, but only as an additional, optional addition. Because of this, he stated that discarding the concept was relatively straightforward. He concluded that maintaining a focus on an instrument lacking sufficient agreement was counterproductive, noting that the funds that would have been allocated to the premium can now be redirected to other areas, allowing for greater governmental flexibility-flexibility that will be utilized for their own state relief packages.
