The initiative “Kufiyas in Buchenwald” will be prohibited from demonstrating at the Buchenwald Memorial Site this coming Sunday. This was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the Weimar Administrative Court. The spokeswoman stated that, “given the specific circumstances, it is necessary to ensure that the dignity of the victims is not undermined”. According to the Assembly Act, authorities can impose conditions on a demonstration if the event takes place at a site “that serves as a memorial site of outstanding, transnational importance remembering the victims of the inhuman treatment under National Socialist violence and arbitrary rule”.
The court perceived the demonstration and the planned wearing of the kuffiyeh, the so-called Palestinian scarf, as an attempt “to use the memorial site and the commemoration established in its statutes as a vehicle to convey other political viewpoints-in this case: the legal and political characterization of the war in Gaza”. The spokeswoman noted that this runs counter to the foundation’s purpose.
The “Kufiyas in Buchenwald” group is calling for the memorial site to openly address the genocide in Gaza, among other things. The planned demonstration faced criticism, with the Federal Government’s Anti-Semitism Officer, Felix Klein, labeling the action a “scandalous attack on the culture of remembrance”. The Buchenwald Memorial Site has expressed concern in recent days that it is increasingly being instrumentalized by extreme political groups for their own agendas.
The organizers have the option to file an appeal with the Thuringia Higher Administrative Court against the decision by the Weimar Administrative Court.
