Consumer Advocates Demand Clear Rules for Concert and Sport Ticket Resale Market

Consumer advocates are calling for stricter rules governing the secondary market for event and concert tickets. Tatiana Halm, a department head for Law and Digital Affairs at the Consumer Center Bavaria, cautioned about the risks faced by ticket purchasers. Speaking on Thursday, she stated that reselling tickets as a commercial model detrimental to consumers should not be allowed. She stressed that anyone buying a ticket on the secondary market must be able to verify the original selling price, the source of the ticket, and its actual validity.

These consumer protection groups are advocating for increased transparency requirements for online marketplaces. They call for mandatory disclosures regarding the original price and any added markups. Furthermore, they demand clear information obligations concerning the identity of the sellers, an efficient process for reporting and remedying illegal listings, and effective safeguards against exorbitant price inflation.

Jutta Gurkmann, head of consumer policy at the German Consumer Federation, urged the federal government to implement the consumer-friendly regulatory measures outlined in the coalition agreement without delay. She emphasized that the government must establish clear and reliable frameworks to ensure that ticket shortages do not disrupt major events like the World Cup or festival seasons.
