Christian Dürr is reportedly planning to resign as FDP leader, according to “Politico” on Monday. He has called for a complete overhaul of the party’s executive – including both the presidium and the federal board – at the upcoming federal convention in May. A vote on this proposal is currently underway within the board, and the party has scheduled a press conference at 5 p.m. to discuss the matter.
Before the announcement of his potential resignation, FDP deputy chairman Wolfgang Kubicki publicly expressed his support for Dürr. Kubicki noted that Dürr was elected ten months ago for a two‑year term by a wide margin. Kubicki clarified that, at present, he has no personal ambitions for the chairmanship. “I don’t rule anything out outright and consider myself fit for a range of roles – from Federal President to DAX CEO – but the question isn’t in focus right now. New elections in the party would require other people to prepare” he told the newspaper “Stern”.
In the state election that took place in Rhineland‑Palatinate on Sunday, the FDP saw its share of the vote drop to 3.4 %. With only 2.1 % of the electorate’s votes, the party will no longer hold seats in the state parliament or in the state government.
