China’s Wang Yi Urges UN Strengthening and Multilateralism at Munich Security Conference

At the Munich Security Conference, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged the international community to strengthen the United Nations and promote multilateralism.

He said on Saturday that the world stands at a crossroads, and humanity must confront the challenge of securing future peace and positive development. Wang added that China has introduced a global initiative aimed at creating a fairer international system.

Continuing his remarks, Wang emphasized that, despite its imperfections, the UN remains the best tool for fostering peace and cooperation. He warned that, without the UN, the world could revert to a regime where “might makes right”. International cooperation is essential for rebuilding trust and addressing global problems, and differences between countries should be resolved through dialogue and collaboration to find common ground.

These comments ran counter to those of his U.S. counterpart and former foreign minister Marco Rubio, who had earlier on the same stage criticized the UN sharply, claiming it had played “no role” in resolving conflicts. Rubio suggested that international organizations should not be abolished entirely but restructured.

Wang also highlighted that China and Europe share a long tradition of cooperation and should work together toward a “multipolar and peaceful world”. He cautioned against further global division and called on all nations to collaborate in shaping a “positive future”.
