CDU Tops Rhineland‑Palatinate Election as Linnemann Cheers Authentic Triumph

The first polling forecasts have shown the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to emerge as the strongest force in the Rhineland‑Palatinate state election. Secretary‑General Carsten Linnemann appeared relieved by the outcome but urged caution, saying the numbers point “in a clear direction” and that the party’s success can be attributed to state‑level issues and the “incredibly authentic” top candidate, Gordon Schnieder. He called the result a “great success, if it holds up”, noting that after 35 years the CDU has returned to government.

SPD secretary‑general Tim Klüssendorf was far more cautious. Speaking to ARD, he described the results as a “harsh setback”. He praised Prime Minister Alexander Schweitzer’s “excellent campaign” and strong approval ratings, adding that this places a clear responsibility on the party’s leadership in Berlin. Klüssendorf said the outcome would be reviewed by the party’s executive board.

Green Party chairwoman Franziska Brantner expressed a degree of satisfaction, even though her party is likely to be pushed out of the state government. She called the result a “good outcome under difficult circumstances” and framed it in the context of the contest between the CDU and SPD, noting that the Greens remain “stable” and are prepared for a strong opposition role.
