CDU Secretary General Urges Steep Income Tax Cuts

Carsten Linnemann, the CDU’s general secretary, has pressed the party for clear cuts to the income tax. Speaking to Bild am Sonntag, he said the party must “deliver” on this issue and that discussions with the SPD should cover a tax‑reform package. While the March reports on health policies and the June documents on pensions are set to be released, Linnemann argues that income‑tax reform must also be on the agenda.

Specifically, he proposes raising the threshold at which the top tax rate applies. Currently the 42 % rate takes effect at an annual gross income of about €68,000; he suggests moving it up to €80,000. This shift would ease the burden on middle‑class households and provide much‑needed relief. He envisions implementing the change midway through the current legislative period.

When asked about financing, Linnemann acknowledged that the money must be available and that funding it is a political responsibility.
