Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) and Federal Housing Minister Verena Hubertz (SPD) have proposed establishing a state-run residential construction company. The idea has drawn criticism from the CDU.
In an interview with the “Rheinische Post” (Friday edition), Jan‑Marco Luczak, the CDU spokesperson for Housing and Construction, expressed skepticism. “I’m wary of a state housing company” he said. “Building a new structure takes time and money. A state‑run developer would face the same structural problems that private builders or the numerous regional housing corporations do”.
Luczak argued that construction in Germany is excessively expensive and slow. “We’re too sluggish and our standards are too high. That must change if housing is to remain affordable” he added. “That’s why we should focus all political effort on making the ‘E‑type’ building permanently cheaper and structurally efficient for all projects”.
Hubertz supported the proposal last Thursday, aligning with Vice‑Chancellor Klingbeil’s endorsement of the idea earlier that week.
