Bund Respects Baden‑Württemberg’s Quick‑Witted State Government, Stays Out of CDU‑Driven Power‑Split Debate

The German federal government stated that it will not intervene in the debate sparked by the CDU about a possible power‑sharing arrangement in Baden‑Württemberg. “I believe it is good practice that government formations are decided by the respective state, so I have no comment” said Deputy Government Spokesperson Steffen Meyer on Wednesday at the German news agency dts.

When asked whether former chancellors had already stepped into state affairs-such as the 2020 election of the Thuringian premier-Meyer added that he is confident a “prompt and decisive state government” can be formed in Baden‑Württemberg. “We look forward to working together” he said.

The debate centres on the result of the latest state election. Although the Greens, with candidate Cem Özdemir at the top of the list, received more votes than the CDU on Sunday, both parties ended up with the same number of seats in the Landtag. Consequently, the Christian Democrats proposed a rotational principle for the office of state premier to reflect the parity in representation.
