The struggling political bloc led by Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) intends to work on new political subjects through a newly established Fundamental Values Commission. According to a founding document reported by the “Spiegel”, this commission is explicitly designed not to intervene in “internal party bargaining processes”. Instead, its members will advise on the programmatic development of the BSW.
This commission is part of a broader restructuring within the party. Earlier this year, Sahra Wagenknecht stepped down as party chair but announced the leadership of the newly formed body, allowing her to maintain significant influence over the BSW leadership. She herself describes her commission as a “genuine joker”. Wagenknecht stated to the “Spiegel” that the group will help counter “the often hysterical, ideologically limited political debate in Germany with well-thought-out proposals”.
The commission, which includes 13 intellectuals such as Foodwatch founder Thilo Bode, author Volker Braun, and writer Daniela Dahn, faces a tight deadline for generating ideas, especially given that Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are scheduled to elect new state parliaments in September.
