Brandenburg CDU Approves SPD Coalition Agreement With Overwhelming Majority

Members of the CDU in Brandenburg voted overwhelmingly in favour of the coalition agreement with the SPD for a new state government. On Saturday, state chairman Jan Redmann announced that, in an internal poll where 1,618 of roughly 5,000 members took part, 83 percent supported the deal. The party’s state board took note of the result and then voted unanimously to form the coalition.

Redmann thanked the members for their endorsement and said that the real work of governing would now begin. He presented the CDU’s personnel proposals for the incoming government to the board: Steeven Bretz was to become the new chair of the CDU’s state parliamentary group, with the required elections scheduled for next Tuesday.

For ministerial portfolios, the CDU is proposing Gordon Hoffmann for Education, Youth and Sports, and Martina Klement of the CSU for Economic Affairs. Jan Redmann himself is set to serve as Deputy Minister‑President and Interior Minister. The statutory secretaries will be Isabelle Haß (Education), Markus Niggemann (Economics), and Uwe Schüller (Interior). Julian Brüning, a member of the state parliament, will temporarily take over as the CDU’s state party general secretary.
