Beyer Warns Merz Washington Visit Will Shift Focus After Iran Attack

Peter Beyer, a CDU foreign‑policy spokesperson, says the recent Iranian attack will change the agenda of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to Washington. The visit had originally been planned to focus mainly on Ukraine and transatlantic tariff disputes, but that focus will now shift toward the conflict and its aftermath. “It will essentially be about Iran and certainly about the joint statement from the Europeans” Beyer told RTL and ntv, asking what the statement actually says and what it means for Germany and Europe.

After Germany, the United Kingdom and France-often referred to as the E3-promised that they would take “military defensive measures” against Iran in an emergency, Beyer was struck by the wording of the document. “The language is surprising; it is unusual for Europeans” he noted. The precise implications will become clearer in the coming days, so they must see what the Chancellor will discuss with U.S. President Donald Trump and what offers, if any, can be made about the scope of possible action.

Beyer says he does not foresee any German military involvement in the operation against Iran. “I cannot imagine that we would have ‘boots on the ground’ or intervene directly in combat” he said. However, he does see room for logistical support or medical assistance.
