Berlin police are now assessing new threats targeting the capital’s power grid as significantly more severe than previously understood. This increased assessment comes from internal police documents reported by the “Welt”.
According to the documents, a recent appeal originating from what is considered a left-wing extremist scene is not merely regarded as authentic, but is explicitly evaluated as “very serious”. Previously, the police had only publicly spoken about “non-specific threat scenarios”.
The catalyst for this change was a posting titled “Cut the Power, so we can see the stars” published several days ago on Indymedia, a website deemed left-wing extremist. In this post, anonymous authors referenced previous sabotage attempts against Berlin’s energy supply, while also calling for solidarity with individuals affected by police measures. Security agencies have interpreted the text as linking anarchistic, anti-military, and anti-technology themes with a positive view toward sabotage. Furthermore, the internal memos outline several potential targets, including energy facilities, state institutions, and corporations involved in technology and defense sectors.
For the first time, the documents also detail a concrete profile of the perpetrators and their possible methods of operation. Investigators anticipate these actions will be carried out by small, covertly organized groups. These perpetrators are expected to operate primarily at night, adopting disguises, and utilizing bicycles for evasion. Suggested meeting points are often located in parks or complex areas, with escape routes specifically planned through hard-to-reach terrain. According to police sources, some necessary tools for the acts may be buried in earth depots weeks ahead of time, and the perpetrators would need to cover considerable distances while fleeing.
