Berlin Notes Iran’s Terror Designation of EU Forces While Prioritizing Soldier Safety

The German Federal Ministry of Defence acknowledged that Iran has announced it would label the armed forces of EU member states as “terrorist groups”. The ministry said it does not see any immediate concrete impact on the Bundeswehr.

A spokesperson told a news agency that the foremost and highest priority is the safety of soldiers and all on‑site personnel. “We are closely monitoring the situation as it unfolds” she said. “We are in constant contact with the troops on the ground and with our partners so that we can react quickly if necessary”. She added that no measures were planned at the present moment.

Deputy government spokesman Steffen Meyer referred to remarks by Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU), who called the allegation that the Bundeswehr is a terrorist organisation “groundless”. “I have nothing further to add on that” Meyer said.
