Berlin Alarmed Over Alleged Glyphosate Use in Southern Lebanon by Israeli Forces

The German foreign ministry has expressed concern about reports that the Israeli army may be using glyphosate in southern Lebanon. “We take the reports very seriously” a spokesman for the foreign office said on Friday to the dts news agency.

He stressed that any action must comply with humanitarian international law. “Measures that endanger civilians, permanently destroy livelihoods, or involve the use of plant toxins are unacceptable” the spokesman added.

Given the fragile situation in southern Lebanon, the ministry emphasized the importance of preventing further escalation. Both sides must observe international law and protect the civilian population.

In recent days, videos shared on social media purport to show a low‑flying aircraft spraying chemicals over Lebanese fields. A UN-UNIFIL spokesperson told ARD that the peacekeeping force had received advance notice from the Israeli army that an air maneuver would take place. UN personnel were advised to avoid the area or seek protection.
