Berlin’s capital airport, BER, ceased operations again on Thursday evening due to the severe winter weather. The airport announced that, because of “blitz‑ice” no take‑offs or landings would be possible for the rest of the night. Passengers scheduled to fly on Friday were advised to check “their flight status”.
After the announcement, some arrivals were still listed as “scheduled” including flights from Athens, Jeddah, Tel Aviv, and Zurich. Whether those flights could actually land remained unclear. Many other arrivals were cancelled, notably those from Milan, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Istanbul, London, and Rome.
Two departures to London and Dubai were also cancelled, along with flights to Luxembourg, Barcelona, Stuttgart, Tel Aviv, and Doha.
Earlier in the morning, numerous flights had already been cancelled or delayed. It was only later in the morning that the first aircraft departed, apparently once the de‑icing problems had been resolved. Additionally, BER has a nighttime flight ban from 00:00 to 05:00, during which no operations are permitted.
