Bavaria PM Söder to tap EU funds for nuclear comeback

Markus Söder, the Minister-President of Bavaria and a member of the CSU, said that the state will also tap EU funding to support the return to nuclear power. Speaking to the “Bild” on its Saturday edition, he praised the EU’s support for new nuclear technologies, adding that Bavaria intends to seize available grants and play a decisive role in research.

Söder highlighted Bavaria’s commitment to magnet‑fusion research, stating that the state alone will contribute up to 400 million euros for the construction of the demo reactor “Alpha”. He emphasized collaborations between major German companies such as RWE and Bavarian start‑ups like Proxima Fusion, as well as the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics.

According to Söder, Bavaria follows a clear philosophy: develop tomorrow’s technologies domestically and make them commercially viable. He believes this approach will ultimately free the country from international crises and lengthy supply chains.
