On the 19th matchday of the Bundesliga, FC Augsburg defeated FC Bayern Munich 2-1 at home-Bayern’s first home loss in almost eleven months and their first defeat after a 27‑game unbeaten streak.
The game started as expected, with Bayern controlling possession from the outset but struggling to find clear avenues into the danger area. Augsburg set up a compact defence, aiming to disrupt Bayern’s buildup play early on, though they failed to generate decisive chances of their own. Bayern’s first shot came from Claude‑Maurice at about 21 metres in the 5th minute, which narrowly missed the post. A few minutes later, Diaz created a threat with a tight‑angled shot that was saved by keeper Zesiger in the 8th minute.
Bayern’s first serious opportunity came in the 23rd minute. A corner from Olise gave Hiroki Ito the chance to convert a header and put Bayern ahead 1-0. They maintained dominance for the rest of the half but could not extend the lead. Diaz almost doubled the advantage from a tight angle, but Augsburg’s defender Dahmen tipped the ball away in the 27th. Just before half‑time, the visitors had another scare when Fellhauer struck a 10‑metre shot that hit the crossbar, after Massengo had set him up with a sharp through‑pass (45+4). Bayern entered the break with a 1-0 advantage.
In the second half, Augsburg improved dramatically, becoming more dynamic and putting pressure on Bayern’s defence. In the 57th minute, Kane had a header opportunity after a Davies cross, but Chaves disrupted it, sparing Dahmen from intervention. Bayern tried to bring calm to the game but were rarely able to showcase their attacking prowess against Augsburg’s improving offensive push.
The equaliser fell in the 75th minute. Arthur Chaves, a new signing for Augsburg, capitalised on a corner by Yannik Keitel, scoring with a skillful body‑shot to level the score 1-1. The breakthrough came soon after, when Han‑Noah Massengo threaded an intricate double‑pass through Claude‑Maurice for the winning goal in the 81st minute, giving Augsburg a 2-1 triumph.
In the final minutes, Bayern made several substitutions, bringing on Musiala, Kimmich, Davies, Bischof, Jackson, and Chaves, while players such as Ito, Goretzka, Karl, and Kim departed the field. Despite the late efforts, Bayern could not find another equaliser.
For Augsburg, the late double‑tap was a well‑deserved comeback against the unbeaten league leaders. Their performance in the second half was markedly superior, while Bayern maintained possession but suffered offensively. The victory secured valuable points for Augsburg in the relegation battle, while Bayern suffered a small setback in their quest for a flawless season ending.
The loss also provided joy for supporters of Leverkusen, as an undefeated championship run-something the club could no longer achieve in this season-was symbolically highlighted from the stands.
Other weekend results were: Heidenheim 0-3 Leipzig, Leverkusen 1-0 Bremen, Mainz 3-1 Wolfsburg, and Frankfurt 1-3 Hoffenheim. Later in the evening, Union Berlin will face Borussia Dortmund.
