The German Airport Association (ADV) is urging the federal government to take action due to the significant rise in oil prices and growing concerns regarding kerosene supplies. According to Ralph Beisel, the Managing Director of the German Airports Association, the industry demands a “tank discount for air travel” suggesting a temporary suspension of the aviation tax to help prevent flight cancellations.
Following the kerosene summit held on Monday at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, Beisel appeared somewhat reserved. He acknowledged that the federal government took “an important first step” by gathering representatives from the energy and air transport sectors. However, he noted that “concrete support measures” for airlines and airports were still lacking, and stated to the magazine that he expects the government to act quickly.
Meanwhile, Lufthansa announced on Wednesday that it plans to cancel 20,000 short-haul flights until October because of high kerosene prices. This reduction is expected to save 40,000 tons of kerosene. Since the start of the Iran War, the cost of kerosene has doubled, placing many airlines in a difficult financial situation.
