According to the latest RTL/ntv “Trendbarometer” the AfD maintains its clear lead in voter favorability, scoring again at 27 percent. This keeps its five percentage point advantage over the CDU/CSU, which currently stands at 22 percent.
The Green Party registered a one percentage point increase, reaching 16 percent-its highest value since the beginning of May 2023. Conversely, The Left Party dropped one point, settling at 11 percent. The support figures for all other registered parties remained unchanged compared to the previous week: the SPD reported 12 percent, the FDP held at 4 percent, and the collective smaller parties, including the BSW, accounted for 8 percent.
In terms of perceived political competence, the AfD remains in the lead, reporting a stable 14 percent. Meanwhile, the CDU/CSU lost one percentage point, now at 12 percent. The Greens are still deemed the most competent party to solve the country’s problems, rated by 8 percent of respondents. The SPD and The Left Party both received identical scores of 5 percent for their perceived competence. Overall, a majority of 54 percent of respondents do not believe any single party is best equipped to tackle the nation’s problems.
Separate data showed that dissatisfaction with Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz continues to climb to a new high. Eighty-five percent, an increase of two percentage points, of citizens expressed dissatisfaction with his work. Only 13 percent reported being satisfied. Even among supporters of the CDU/CSU, criticism prevails, with 53 percent of them reporting being unhappy with Merz.
This poll was conducted with 2,002 people between April 28 and May 4, 2026.
