Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney Welcomes Ukrainian President’s Surprise Arrival at G7 Summit, Discusses Sanctions and Military Aid
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the surprise arrival of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 summit in Kananskis, Canada, on Tuesday. The sudden appearance of the Ukrainian leader came after US President Donald Trump’s early departure from the meeting.
In a joint statement, the leaders had earlier addressed the conflict between Israel and Iran, but did not further discuss the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Canadian Prime Minister expressed condolences to the victims of recent Russian attacks and announced additional sanctions against Russia, stating that it is necessary to exert maximum pressure on the country.
Measures will include sanctions against a range of individuals and institutions in Russia, as well as over 200 ships, known as the “shadow fleet” being used by the country to circumvent sanctions, Carney said. The prime minister also mentioned the provision of military aid to Ukraine, including ammunition and the release of a new credit package based on frozen Russian assets.
Zelensky thanked Canada for the package of support and for its efforts in the peace negotiations, reiterating his commitment to an unconditional ceasefire and expressing a willingness to discuss further sanctions with the Canadian Prime Minister.
Prior to the summit, Carney had identified the support of Ukraine as a central theme, alongside energy security, open markets and security against international crime and forest fires.
