Ukraine to Engage in Direct Talks with Russia in Istanbul, President Says
In a statement on Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that his country will participate in direct talks with Russia in Istanbul on Monday, led by Defense Minister Rustem Umierov. Zelensky emphasized the importance of the negotiations, stating that the Ukrainian delegation’s primary objective is to protect the country’s independence, state and people.
The President outlined the key tasks for the near future, having discussed the matter with high-ranking government officials. He also defined Ukraine’s positions ahead of the meeting in Istanbul on Monday. Zelensky stressed the need for a comprehensive and unconditional ceasefire, the release of prisoners and the return of abducted children.
To establish a reliable and lasting peace and ensure Ukraine’s security, Zelensky believes that a high-level meeting is necessary. The President emphasized that the most critical issues can only be resolved by state and government leaders.
