The youth wing of Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD), known as the Jusos, has issued a call for the party to prioritize the concerns and interests of young people.
Juso chairman Philipp Türmer expressed deep concern regarding the SPD’s current standing with the younger demographic, stating to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland that the party’s voice often fails to resonate with this group. He cited the results of the recent federal election as evidence of this disconnect. Türmer emphasized that without the active engagement and support of young voters, the SPD’s long-term viability is at risk.
To address this issue, Türmer urged the party to comprehensively incorporate the perspectives, demands and frustrations of young people throughout the preparation of a new foundational program. This program, slated for completion by 2027, will undergo rigorous scrutiny to ensure every statement clearly demonstrates the party’s commitment to addressing young people’s issues. Türmer stressed that this process will require constant evaluation, ensuring the party actively listens, understands and advocates for the needs of the younger generation.
