Youth Chief's Scathing Verdict Ahead of Party Congress

A senior official of the SPD’s youth wing, Philipp Türmer, has painted a dire picture of the state of his party, holding the party’s chairman, Lars Klingbeil, accountable for the party’s current situation.

Türmer expressed his concerns about the party’s lack of a clear vision and its credibility issues, stating that the replacement of many SPD ministers in the federal government is not a sufficient response to the party’s recent electoral defeat. He believes the party’s two main problems are a thin, incoherent vision and a severe credibility crisis.

The Juso chief also criticized the party’s inability to present a unified vision for the German society, saying that even party leaders have different ideas about what the country should look like after 20 years of SPD-led government. He called for a new vision that goes beyond simply maintaining the status quo and inspiring people to support the Social Democratic Party once again.

The criticism comes as Klingbeil, who has been party chairman since December 2021, is set to face re-election at the SPD’s federal party convention in Berlin on Friday, alongside Minister of Labor Bärbel Bas.
