Construction for a new highway bridge in the Cologne district of Gremberg has led to the unexpected discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb. The city of Cologne confirmed the find on Friday afternoon.
The device, weighing 250 kilograms, is an American bomb with an impact fuse and requires immediate deactivation.
To facilitate the operation, a safety perimeter of 300 meters will be established. Closures of the A4 and A559 highways are anticipated to begin around 2:00 PM. Residents in the vicinity are not expected to be affected and rail traffic will continue uninterrupted. The precise timing of the bomb disposal operation remains to be determined. City authorities are requesting motorists to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
