Research Minister Dorothee Bär Aims to Attract Global Talent to German Science Hub
In a bid to strengthen Germany’s position as a global science hub, Research Minister Dorothee Bär has announced plans to attract top researchers from around the world. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) politician emphasized the need to provide a comprehensive package for scientists and their families, including job opportunities for partners, childcare services and more.
While Germany cannot compete with the high salaries offered in the United States, Bär stressed that guaranteed scientific freedom is a unique selling point for the country. To this end, the minister has announced plans to increase funding for the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the German Research Foundation, with the aim of creating incentives through stipends and research programs.
Bär also emphasized the importance of transferring scientific knowledge into the economy, stating that she is “strong on the transfer from science to business.” The minister acknowledged the significance of basic research, but also believes that turning good ideas into profitable products is a worthy goal. “If ideas from Germany result in products made in Germany, that’s exactly the right thing” she said.
