German State Leader Re-Elected as Party Chief in Landslide Victory

In a resounding vote, Brandenburg’s Minister-President Dietmar Woidke has been re-elected as the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the eastern German state, securing an overwhelming 84.9 percent of the votes at the party’s regional convention in Cottbus.

Woidke, who has been in office since 2013, received the support of 107 out of 126 delegates, with 14 opposing his bid and five abstaining. This marks the second time in three years that Woidke has received a significant majority, having secured 84.4 percent of the vote in 2021.

Since taking the helm in 2013, Woidke has been the longest-serving SPD state leader in Germany, succeeding Matthias Platzeck in the role. His latest victory solidifies his position as a prominent figure in the SPD’s regional politics.
