Will the SPD Cave to Ukraine Aid Demands?

In a move to pressure the SPD, the Greens have proposed an additional session of the Budget Committee if the party still intends to approve a further three billion euros in military aid to Ukraine. “We consider the funds for the protection of people in Ukraine to be urgently needed, at the same time, there is still no agreement in the federal government” said Sven-Christian Kindler, the Greens’ budget spokesperson, to the Rheinische Post (Friday edition).

According to Kindler, the Greens in the Budget Committee enabled a majority through abstentions on Wednesday. However, the consent of the Chancellor and the Finance Minister, both from the SPD, is still lacking. “The Budget Committee can, at any time, hold a special session to vote on a unified proposal from the Finance Minister. We have already approved a range of over-budget expenditures for 2025” Kindler said.
