Hamburg’s Citizens Head to the Polls. Since 8 a.m., the voting stations have been open and 1,320,000 residents aged 16 and above have been called upon to cast their ballots.
According to polls, the SPD, led by the incumbent First Mayor Peter Tschentscher, has been in the lead with around 32 to 33 percent for months, despite the social democrats having received only about 23 percent of the vote in the recent federal election in the Hamburg metropolitan area.
The Greens and the CDU are running neck and neck in the polls, with approximately 16 to 18 percent, while the Left Party is expected to garner around 10 to 13 percent and the AfD, around 9 to 11 percent. The BSW and FDP are not expected to play a significant role, despite having received 4.0 and 4.5 percent of the vote, respectively, in the federal election in Hamburg.
The red-green coalition, which has been in power in the Hanseatic city for the past ten years, can thus harbor hopes of being re-elected in a new iteration – unless there are any unexpected surprises on election night.
