According to SPD politician Ralf Stegner, the upcoming federal election campaign will be shaped by the concern over a potential cooperation between the Union and AfD. “We are at a crossroads and must decide how we move forward” he told the “Rheinische Post” (Monday’s edition).
“I’m on the campaign trail and find that extremely many people have felt the recent parliamentary votes as a grave occurrence” he said. He believes the topic will take center stage in the election campaign. “Ultimately, the question must be answered: would Friedrich Merz be the right chancellor? Or is it not Olaf Scholz instead?”
“It was a singular event in the history of the Federal Republic. The demonstrations are legitimate and necessary” he added. “The right consequence, however, is not to call for taking to the barricades. The right consequence is to remind those responsible, in this case the Union, FDP and BSW, that there is a competitive struggle between democratic parties, but parties like the AfD are enemies of democracy.” No cooperation is possible with them, nowhere and for no reason. “CDU/CSU, FDP and Sahra Wagenknecht must be reminded that what they did only has one winner: the extremists.
